Club History

The original lawn bowling club was constructed in 1961 by the Township of North York on municipal property. In 1974, when this land was required for the North York City Hall, the club was re-located to the present site at 150 Beecroft Rd. on land leased on a long term basis from the adjacent York Cemetery by the city.

History of Sport‏

It is thought that the sport of lawn bowling originated in Egypt more than 5000 years ago and was known then as "skittles". It later spread to Greece and Rome and was called "bucci". The modern game started in England in the 12th century and has since spread throughout the world. The picture below depicts Sir Frances Drake playing a game of bowls while waiting to engage the Spanish Armada in battle in 1588. To-day, over forty countries are members of World Bowls, the international federation for the sport."
